- Subject: Truths about COMM drivers in Windows
-
- Communications drivers in Windows are a very sticky issue.
-
- Trumpet Winsock runs in Windows, which means it takes advantage (without
- any work) of any NS16550 FIFO chip that you may have. The standard driver
- with Windows 3.1 has fairly good performance rates in Windows (DOS boxes
- are another story which I will ignore for this discussion). WFXCOMM
- allows you a few more settings, but I've never seen anyone indicate that
- it provides huge performance gains.
-
- You may want to look at the communications architecture of Windows
- for Workgroups 3.11 (called VCOMM) ... because of the way it was designed,
- it can give up to 2x performance boosts in some cases over the current
- Windows 3.1 driver. Realistically, you can look for lower numbers.
-
- If Trumpet Winsock is performing poorly, get a standard communications
- package and try and download with Zmodem. If that performs poorly,
- search for new drivers. If not, search for a new TCP/IP stack.

-
- Like they say, you will have to run a SMTP server and keep it up for at a
- minimim of a few hours a day continuously in order to catch most messages.
- Different sites have different retry time set for SMTP connections.
-
- >11. Where do I run the SMTP server as mentioned in #9? On netcom's UNIX
- > machine or on my PC.
-
- Your PC.
-
- >Is PC Eudora a SMTP server program?
-
- No, Eudora is just a POP3 client (Post Office Protocol). It merely connects to
- a POP3 server (in this case on netcom.com) and retrieves mail waiting for you
- there.
-
- >How can I run it as a SMTP server. If it is not, can anyone recommend me one
- >please.
-
- John Junod is writing one and it is called WS_GMAIL. You can find it on
- ftp.usma.edu, /pub/msdos directory. The SMTP part works for the most part but
- it is still in testing phase.
-
- >What is the Mail User Agent mentioned in #9?
-
- Another word for a mail reader like Elm, Pine, mailx, whatever. The package
- WS_GMAIL also includes a POP3 server and client so you can actually run the
- POP3 server and continue to use Eudora to read mail.

-
- Never heard of a "LS" command in the FTP Protocol. Its not listed in any
- RFC's that I know of. Any ftp client program that allows input of the
- "LS" command changes that to "LIST" or "NLST" on transmit to the remote
- host. What a user types in an FTP client is not necessarily what is
- transmitted.
-
- I have been using my WS_FTP program to go to Sparky.umd.edu and even
- uploaded one of the most recent versions of WS_FTP there. If you are
- using WS_FTP, I'd recommend using a "-" as the first character of your
- E-Mail address (for all hosts) or password that you use for anonymous
- ftp's.
-
- WS_FTP will properly auto-detect sparky.umd.edu. I just checked sparky
- for the four time in two weeks to verify that everything does work.
